MASS SUICIDE AT PILENAI: LITHUANIAN DEFENDERS CHOOSE DEATH OVER ENSLAVEMENT
The biggest mass suicide in history is chronicled in medieval texts as having occurred in Lithuania in the 1300s. Holed up in a fortress in Punia, and allegedly faced with subjugation and enslavement by the crusading Catholic Teutonic Order, more than 4,000 Pagan men, women and children ended their own lives.
